Kenya Community Based Organisation is a duly registered non profit organization
that specializes in educational sponsorship for the needy and disadvantaged
school going children and young adults from pre-school to University mainly
from the Deep Sea slums.
The
Deep Sea slums are located in Highridge, Parklands area. It’s over 12,000
residents are mostly children and youth. The slum is not commonly known to many
Kenyans since it is uniquely sandwiched between very well developed and
affluent residential and business locations of Highridge, Westlands, Parklands
and Muthaiga. The adult residents mainly supply casual labour force to these
plush neighborhoods.
Just
like other slums in Nairobi, Kenya, there is a high incidence of poverty
manifested by drug and alcohol abuse, petty crime, prostitution, sex
exploitation, early pregnancies, high school drop outs and so many other
incidences.
The
residents of Deep sea slums can barely afford proper housing, food or school
requirements for their children.
A
tin shack that residents here call home is rented for between 1,200kshs to
1,500kshs per month. This is approximately 12 to 15 dollars per month. The tin
shacks do not have toilets and running water which also makes the area prone to
cholera and other water borne diseases.
Deep
Sea is also home to street families that mainly hang around Westlands, Nairobi.
On
the night of Monday the 27th of November 2017, at around 8 pm, a big
part of the slums was burnt to ashes. The fire that took a long time to put out
left many homeless and one 3 year old child lost her life.
There
was no time to rescue property owing to the closeness of the houses to each
other and the school going children lost their text books, school uniforms,
shoes, beddings, utensils, clothes, cooking stoves you name it.
Most
families are currently sleeping on verandahs of Church buildings and social
halls as they find means of rebuilding their homes.
One
family stands out as a microcosm of this predicament. The Dida family which
comprises of Father (a watchman), mother (who cannot seek employment because
she has a special child that she has to look
after) and five children namely Guyo who is
autistic, Tume who is joining class 8 next year, Dima 8 years old and the last
born Sala.
After
the fire razed their home, they are currently sleeping in the open under a
tree. This family and many others living in this slum most especially those the
fire affected need your support to that they can rebuild their lives and so
that their children will be able to go back to school next year.
